How to Choose a Teak Dining Table Size

Buying guide

Sizing a Royal Teak Collection dining table for your terrace, from clearance to seating to extension tables.

A dining table sets the scale of an outdoor room. If it's too small, a summer dinner feels cramped. If it's too large, the terrace becomes a corridor. Below is how we size a table for a client, using the Royal Teak Collection pieces we curate. Every table is built from responsibly harvested plantation-grown Grade-A teak with stainless steel hardware.

Start with the space, not the table

Measure the area you can give to dining, then subtract clearance. A common planning rule is to allow about 36 inches between the table edge and any wall, railing, step or planter so chairs can slide back and guests can pass behind them. Allow more if the area is also a walkway. Mark the footprint on the deck with tape before you decide; it is the simplest way to see the scale in place.

Match the table to how many you seat

Royal Teak lists these seating capacities for the tables we carry:

Table Size Seats (per Royal Teak)
Sailor Folding, round or square 30 in 4
Large Sailor, round 47 in 4
Dolphin, round or square 50 in 4
Admiral Dining Table, round 50 in 4
Admiral Dining Table 32 x 65 in 6
Admiral Dining Table 40 x 70 in 6
Admiral Dining Table 40 x 90 in 8

Standard dining height across the range is 29.5 inches. Bar-height pieces such as the Admiral Bar Tables stand 39 inches tall.

Consider a table that changes size

If you host a few people most nights and a crowd a few times a season, an extending table saves you from compromising.

  • Family Expansion Tables use a self-storing butterfly leaf, so the extension lives inside the table. The 60 to 78 in table comes in rectangular or oval, at 35 in wide. The 72 to 96 in rectangular table is 39 in wide. The 96 to 120 in table comes in rectangular or oval, at 44 in wide.
  • Gala Expansion Tables extend in two stages. The Gala 64 goes from 64 to 80 to 96 in. The Gala 84 double-leaf goes from 84 to roughly 101 to 118 in.
  • Drop Leaf Tables fold their sides down. The 5 ft round opens to 60 in, and the 6 ft round opens to 72 in. With one leaf down, either can serve as a half-circle buffet against a wall, which makes them a good choice for screened porches and sunrooms.

Round, square or rectangular

  • Round tables (Drop Leaf, Dolphin, Sailor, Admiral 50 in) keep conversation in one circle and suit square spaces and smaller groups.
  • Rectangular and oval tables (Admiral, Family Expansion, Gala, Comfort) suit long terraces and larger gatherings.
  • Folding tables (Sailor) put away easily when the space has to do double duty.

Shade and umbrellas

Most of these tables include a 1.5 in and 2 in umbrella hole. Check the product page for the specific table; the Royal Teak Bar Table, for example, has no umbrella hole.

Weight and delivery

Solid teak is heavy. The 6 ft Drop Leaf weighs 200 lbs and the 96 to 120 in rectangular Family Expansion Table weighs 205 lbs. Larger tables ship as palletized freight with scheduled curbside delivery; the carrier calls ahead to book a weekday window. Royal Teak pieces ship from Florida, and shipping is free.
